I have a confession.

I've been coaching other people to finish their books for years while my own memoir sat on my hard drive doing nothing.

The earliest material in it goes back to around 2015. Some of it older than that. Journal entries, blog posts, notes from seasons of ministry in Lima, documents I'd written for different purposes over different years that I always suspected had a book somewhere inside them.

The problem was I couldn't see it. I could feel that there was something there — a story worth telling — but every time I sat down to try and shape it into a book, I couldn't find the structure. It was like having all the pieces of a puzzle but no picture on the box to work from.

So it just sat there in Scrivener. For years.

A few months ago I finally did something I should have done sooner. I took all of it — the notes, the documents, the journal entries, years worth of material — and started working through a process that finally showed me the shape of the book that had been hiding in there the whole time.

For the first time in nearly a decade, I could see it.

Here's what I've learned doing this for myself and for clients: the material is almost never the problem. Most people who feel stuck have more than enough to work with. What's missing is someone who can hold all of it at once, see how the pieces connect, and hand you back a structure you can actually write into.

That's a significant part of what I do now with coaching clients — especially the ones who have years of notes, journals, sermons, or documents sitting in folders they've never known what to do with.
