Is not bothering to market your book actually disobedient?

Mr. Steve

Author & Writing Coach

I recently was talking to a writing colleague of mine I colaborate with often.

We were talking about Christian authors who pour years into a book, release it, and then do almost nothing to get it in front of people.

And the reason they give is always some version of: I don't want it to be about me. I just want God to get the glory.

Which sounds humble. Until you think about it for a second.

He said something that stuck with me: you're very selfish if you do that.

Not because you wrote the book. Because you won't tell anyone about it.

If God put something on your heart — a message, a story, a hard-won insight — and you write it and then leave it sitting on Amazon with no reviews and no visibility, who exactly is being served by your "humility"?

The people who needed it didn't get it. The message went nowhere. And God gets the glory for... what, exactly?

There's a line I've used for years that came from a missionary I met before I ever went to the field: God works on the informed mind.

He can't move people toward your book if they don't know it exists.

Noah built the ark and God brought the animals. Sure. But you're not Noah. You're not building a vessel for the survival of creation. You wrote a book. And the people it's meant for aren't going to show up by instinct.

I'm not saying you need a publicist or a huge advertising budget. I'm saying there's a version of "waiting on God" that's actually just fear wearing a spiritual costume.

If any of this is landing and you've got a book that's been sitting quietly for longer than you'd like to admit — or you're about to release one and you're already dreading the marketing part — reply and tell me where you're at.

.Or if you'd rather just talk through it, you can grab a time here:

Stevie Wonder Author, Writing Coach If you've spent any time in charismatic or Pentecostal circles, you've probably run into cessationism — the idea that the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit ended with the last of the apostles. Maybe you've had to argue against it. Maybe you've never quite had the tools to do it well. Jon Mark Ruthven's On the Cessation of the Charismata is the book that gives you those tools — and it's one I've had on my digital shelf for over twenty years. I first came...

Hey Reader, I have a confession. I've been coaching other people to finish their books for years while my own memoir sat on my hard drive doing nothing. The earliest material in it goes back to around 2015. Some of it older than that. Journal entries, blog posts, notes from seasons of ministry in Lima, documents I'd written for different purposes over different years that I always suspected had a book somewhere inside them. The problem was I couldn't see it. I could feel that there was...

Sir Steve-a-lot Author, Writing Coach Hey Reader, Something happened this week that's worth talking about — especially if you've been following along with what I've been sharing about writing with AI. As of August 2nd, Claude started embedding an invisible watermark into every piece of text it generates. You can't see it. It doesn't change how the writing reads. But it travels with the text when you copy and paste it, and AI detection tools will be able to find it. A lot of people are...
