I just narrated a book that challenges 100 years of cessationist theology

If you've spent any time in charismatic or Pentecostal circles, you've probably run into cessationism — the idea that the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit ended with the last of the apostles.

Maybe you've had to argue against it.

Maybe you've never quite had the tools to do it well.

Jon Mark Ruthven's On the Cessation of the Charismata is the book that gives you those tools — and it's one I've had on my digital shelf for over twenty years.

I first came across it in the early 2000s when I was living in Pensacola and writing a paper on speaking in tongues. I sourced it again when I wrote Nine Lies People Believe About Speaking in Tongues in 2016.

So when the opportunity came up to narrate the official audiobook version, I didn't have to think twice.

Ruthven doesn't just push back on cessationism. He dismantles the historical, philosophical, and biblical scaffolding it rests on, piece by piece.

His main target is B.B. Warfield's Counterfeit Miracles, which has shaped cessationist thinking for nearly a century.

The argument is that cessationism isn't actually a biblical position — it's a theological tradition dressed up to look like one.

Enjoy!

P.S. It's a theology title, so it's NOT a light listen — but if this topic matters to you, you'll be glad you got through it.

Mr. Steve Author & Writing Coach I recently was talking to a writing colleague of mine I colaborate with often. We were talking about Christian authors who pour years into a book, release it, and then do almost nothing to get it in front of people. And the reason they give is always some version of: I don't want it to be about me. I just want God to get the glory. Which sounds humble. Until you think about it for a second. He said something that stuck with me: you're very selfish if you do...

Hey Reader, I have a confession. I've been coaching other people to finish their books for years while my own memoir sat on my hard drive doing nothing. The earliest material in it goes back to around 2015. Some of it older than that. Journal entries, blog posts, notes from seasons of ministry in Lima, documents I'd written for different purposes over different years that I always suspected had a book somewhere inside them. The problem was I couldn't see it. I could feel that there was...

Sir Steve-a-lot Author, Writing Coach Hey Reader, Something happened this week that's worth talking about — especially if you've been following along with what I've been sharing about writing with AI. As of August 2nd, Claude started embedding an invisible watermark into every piece of text it generates. You can't see it. It doesn't change how the writing reads. But it travels with the text when you copy and paste it, and AI detection tools will be able to find it. A lot of people are...
